Thoughts on the PC UI art style "modernization"?

    It's hideous. And totally out of character for this game. Would like a toggle to go back to familiar UI, and quit messing with the stuff that works and fix some of the stuff that doesn't.

    I have mixed feelings about it
    I love how the new modern is what I consider old school. Those flat icons where the standard 30 years ago, (and not due to technology it was an art decision back then as well). Now we've come full circle.

    Everytime I look at the new icons, especially in the top bar, I first think "that looks strange", then that warm and fuzzy feeling of nostalgia kicks in and I think of simpler times and better™ games. Then I get flashbanged by some weirdo on an apex mount and I remember that I play ESO.

    The new UI style is not a good fit for the game. It does not communicate "Elder Scrolls" to me, feels separate from the world.

    The flat style (which I am often a fan of) simply does not work well in this environment. It's a step backwards. I have always had a problem with the primary Univers typeface used (as I feel a "fantasy" serifed typeface would be more fitting), but the new "clean" look is simply at odds with the grit of tamriel.

    The old one looked fine. I mean I am extremely vocal about many things in this game, but I never complained about the style of the old UI.

    First impression is i really dislike it... but will live with it for a bit and see if familiarity makes it less distracting.

    I really hate to use UI addons/mods, but I will probably have to make an exception. Yuk.

    Amateurs can usually get away with it, though.

    In my case, the new “modern” update messed with the windows on personal addons and I am deciding if I want to fix it or not.

    Oh crap, they've flattened everything. Even the icons look bold and amateurish with the blue glow, compared to the gold glow that was still on the PTS in version 11.0.4.

    We told them that the new modernized UI was bad VERY early on in the PTS cycle, that if people wanted something like this they could easily use one of the many UI add-ons, but they didn't listen nor seem to fix anything about how bad it was, lawl. 🤷‍♀️

    I think the majority of the assets are now created by interns or personnel at the bottom of the totem pole (who are cheaper to employ). The quantity of errors in the game is appalling (grammar & sentence construction, I'm looking at you), not to mention the errors in design layout (the login screen is one example). I cannot believe these errors made it to the final, published version. It's as if no one cares to pay people enough to produce quality work anymore. As long as "it's good enough," it's pushed to print/publication.

    Honestly, I think this is just some gaming industry trend in modern looking UIs. I have seen social media comments about games sharing look and feel. It probably wouldn’t be hard to find the inspiration behind this change.

    The strangest thing is that there was no reason to change the UI at all. They could have just left it the way it was - without having any extra costs or efforts.

    Yes, 1.2 gigs for an addon, that is what I meant. You have to integrate all the old textures to make it work.
    Wasn't there a Lua memory limit for addons? 1024 MB or so?

    Saving storage space on the client side is laughable because they increased storage usage from 88 gigabytes to 128 gigabytes for the live server.

    I could likely trim out a few more files, but version 1 didn’t fully replace all textures—some UI controls unexpectedly pull from Gamepad file paths. That’s part of why the package is so large.

    As for performance, the addon doesn’t negatively impact it. The code itself runs in XML, so the game engine processes it in C, not Lua. Only the texture path table is handled in Lua, which keeps things efficient.

    Sad to see PTS feedback was, as I'm very much expecting these days, completely ignored. The new UI really spoils the feel of the game. It seems unfinished and also feels flat and without character.

    UI is such a fundamental part of how you interact with a game. ESO and its players deserved better than this.

    This is spot on how I read why the changes are made. The interns at the design studio I worked at in Hollywood made similar mistakes. Oddly though, many of the issues I see with the UI are first semester mistakes that should get weeded out in the first year of college. So, not sure what to think here.

    Its terrible, all my colours seem flat and watered down, i dont like the new look at all. My necro is called Scarlett Rott, mainly due to her bright crimson red hair, Now this update has made her hair orange / copper colour !!!

    All my characters seem to be not as they should be something is off on them, and also the HUD and all the inter face panels seem very opaque and lot harder to read, all my attribute bars are wrong, and also discoloured. I would like this UI changed back to what we had, this new one is just not as nice.

    It's not a massive change, but it is cleaner and crisper and offers much improved visibility on smaller and lower resolution screens.

    I agree with the person who called it "lifeless". It's made everything flat and bland with no style, like they did the bare mimimum to make it...mostly, functional, and absolutely nothing more.

    I can tolerate that from addons (although I avoid it whenever there's an alternative) because those are often made by one person so you have to expect "programmer art". From a professional studio I expect something that looks finished.

    The only good news in this thread is that there's an addon to fix it.

    Has anyone else noticed the obtrusive pulsating effect they use when you get new notifications now? Of course, on a static picture you don't see much...

    ...but I do find it really annoying. Especially since it doesn't go away unless you manually delete all notifications.

    The pulsing really gets on my nerves, so I'd have to interrupt my gameplay all the time now to click it away?!
